When we first found out that we were going to have to come up with a new name for the brewery (because of trademark issues) we instantly thought: there are so many breweries that share names this seems silly! After all, the conflict is with our brewery name and the name of a beer, so what’s the big deal?
Well, come to find out, it’s a big deal if someone "owns" the word and chooses to enforce trademark rights. Fortunately there are many breweries that enjoy sharing names/words. We thought our allies might be interested in seeing this page out of this month’s DRAFT magazine, it’s called DOUBLES. If you don't feel like downloading the DRAFT article, here's a list of the Doubles: Stone Brewing Company Standing Stone Brewing Company Burnside Brewing Olde Burnside Brewing Mother Earth Brewing Company Mother Earth Brewing Big Wood Brewing Big Woods Brewing Epic Ales Epic Brewing Fire on the Mountain Brewing Fire Mountain Brewing If you are interested in helping us select an alias for UnderCover Ale Works, you can vote for our new name by Monday, November 12th. Rich and I drove the UnderCover sprinter van to San Diego for the Craft Brewers Conference and World Beer Cup. We sold 6 kegs to Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. Incognito Saison was put on tap as soon as we arrived. Here is a pic of Rich sharing some with Sam (Dogfish Head Brewing) Greg (Stone Brewing Co.) Bill (Victory Brewing). Incognito received the comment "I'd say you hit this one on the nose, good job Rich"
Ask any brewer what the most laborious task in brewing is, and I have no doubt it will be a resounding GRAIN HANDLING. Well (unfortunately) we had to take it to another level. Here’s how it went in picture form:
WE DID IT! Here is our 11′ Combi (hot liquor & mash tun) tank laying down…resting before it begins it’s life long job of making beer. This tank was a challenge to say the least. As we were standing it up we realized the fork lift needed to go beyond the height of the ceiling. Since it could not, 5 of us had to GENTLY push it the rest of the way. As it tee-tered back and forth on it’s stubby little legs, we held our breath and got out of it’s way. It stopped and we cheered! No wall reconstruction needed.
The install is coming. Check back for new pics on how the hell we're getting those tanks in the building.
All work makes Rich and Susan dull, grumpy and unmotivated. So we purchased a movable disc golf basket to break up the work, work, work-day. We also bought one permanent basket that we will set near the brewery; the combination of the two baskets will help us design the rest of the course. Feel free to stop by and toss a disk.
Rich (Head Brewer & Co-owner-sitting) and Kevin (Sunpower Construction-standing) mapped out the availability of solar exposure for each month . This determined the viability of a pre-heat solar hot water system.
![]() Breakin' Ground If the removal of two 80-year-old pine trees constitutes ground breaking, then Under Cover Ale Works is underway. On April 22nd we fell two trees to begin the cut for the brewery foundation. Ten days prior we ventured down to Guadalajara Mexico to check out a 5 bbl steam fired brew-house that was (and still is) for sale. Although we did not purchase the equipment never-the-less it was a fun trip. We tasted a new craft beer from a brewery in Guadalajara called Minerva. I can honestly say that Minerva’s beers are a refreshing step in the right direction for Mexico beer. May 16th 5 hours after receiving an email about a 10 bbl direct fired brew-house available in Gunnison, Colorado, Rich, Karu, Lao Tzu (our doggies) and I were packed in our VW Westy and heading East.
Twenty hours later upon arrival to view the equipment we learned that not only had someone else beat us there but this someone else had put in a full price offer. We viewed the system and decided to go to the Gunnison Brewery to talk it over. Ultimately, we didn’t think the equipment was worth bidding more than the asking price and so we camped, played some disc golf, drank a few brews and headed to Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. |
